160 ELZA/MILTINHO E SAMBA ODEON(BRA) 25.00
The raw voice of Elza Soares always sounds fantastic and, together with
Miltinho, they turn out some rough samba diamonds. Best is probably
the wicked Afro-cuban number "Mal De Amor".
623 ED LINCOLN SAME MUSIDISC(BRA) 25.00
"Lecon de Baion" high fun factor for these quirky 60s organ
melodies. With a healthy dose of the fromage, but this particular tune
is still irresistible! 'Un, deux, s'il vous plait..'
630 CLAUDETTE SOARES DE TANTO AMOR PHILIPS(BRA) 20.00

fresh, different sounding batucada, look no further - "Batucada
Tropical" is, quite simply, a monster!
118 MPB4 DEIXA ESTAR.. . ELENCO(BRA) 25.00
Consistent, tight set from these vocal wonders. Favourite here is "Beco
Do Mota" - there's something about those harmony breakdowns &
choppy rhythm changes... very different to most tunes in this category,
but it works beautifully.
119 MARCOS RESENDE & INDEX MPBC PHILIPS(BRA) sold
If it's cosmic, inspirational Fender fusion you need (!), then the search
is over... the massive "Vidigal" is the
definitive take on the genre. Lots of other goodies tucked away on this
heavyweight slab of vinyl.
120 JAYME MARQUES EN DIRECTO RCA(SPA DBL) sold
(M-/vg+/ex some tracks have a little light background noise, nice overall)
BACK IN STOCK! His rarest LP by far! They didn't press too many of these
because back in those days a double LP retailed for double the price,
see? Which is a pity, because it's right up there with his finest work
- there's the highly infectious funky samba "O Sapo" - essential
club dynamite! For lovers of jazz-samba, "Quintessencia" is
one to cherish, plus there's loads more inc. "Abre Alas" etc
121 JOAO BOSCO GALOS DE BRIGA RCA(BRA) sold

Wow - can you say 'funk me in a hot & groovy bossa-style please?'
Just check out "Mane Joao" - tune!
154 TAMBA TRIO MAGNITUDES VARIG DC-10 RCA(ARG) 40.00
What was it with Brazilians and jets in the seventies? In any case,
getting Varig to sponsor this record was a great move, as Varig were
obviously looking for something modernistic to give them a cutting edge
image and Tamba Trio were aching to experiment with synthesizers &
new rhythms. It worked out great - musically speaking - there's some
stunning moments on this record. This Argentinian issue includes "Mestre
Bimba" as well as "Visco De Jaga", "Jogo Da Vida".
154 NANA CAYMMI NANA CAYMMI TROVA(ARG) 25.00
Great funky sleeve for this Argentine issue, includes the super funky
Afro-bossa grooves of "Cala Boca
Menino", which, by the way, translates as something like "shaddup
brat".
155 TOQUINHO LA BOSSA DE EDISA(URU) 35.00
Nice album all round, but of course special mention must be made for
the wonderful "Zana" - excellent
clubby samba tune!!
156 ZIMBO TRIO ZIMBO PARNASO(ARG) 20.00
Augmented to quintet status on this LP thanks to the not insignificant
presence of Hector Costita & Heraldo Do Monte, the bigger, jazzier
sound serves them well on groovy tracks such as "Jocando",
"Quiero Aracaju".
157 JOAO BOSCO-ALDIR BLANC DISCO DE OURO RCA(BRA) sold

which is up to his usual standards.
"Magimani Sagei"
166 SERGIO MENDES & BRASIL '66 EXPO '70 A&M(SPA) 15.00
Classic LP with Sergio and Co. really getting down & stretching
out, showing the 0saka crowd what they
were truly capable of when in the mood. They turn their selection of
pop standards & Beatles covers like
"Norwegian Wood", "Fool On The Hill" and give it
that unmistakeable jazzy latin touch, bringing out the
melodies and rhythms of the tunes in a totally unconcerned manner like
few can. Pop? Jazz? Bossa? They
certainly weren't worrying about it!The extended, groovy version of
"Mas Que Nada" is an all-time club
classic!

in the USA. Includes "Noa Noa", "Reza" etc

out the jazzy, brassy uptempo bossa "Amor De Mais", sounding
like vintage Simonal/Som Tres.

171 HELOISA RASO SAMBA, VIOLAO E EU ARG PROD PHONO(ARG) 150.00
With Sebastiao Tapajos. Very in demand and even rarer than the famousTapajos/Nazareth
release, you don't see this sweet vocal bossa LP very often!!!
172 SEBASTIAO TAPAJOS BRASIL/ARTE DE LA GUITARRA TROVA(ARG) 20.00
Although not as well known as Baden Powell, this guitarist treads a
similar musical path and also boasts a
good number of Argentine-released LPs to his name. Always of a high
standard, this 1971 recording
includes the tough bossa-jazz of "Ganga", "A 200 P.H.",
"Consolacao".
173 SEBASTIAO TAPAJOS VIOLAO & AMIGOS RCA(BRA) 60.00
Scarce! Recorded in Rio, 1977 and featuring an impressive lineup including
Paulo Moura, Hermeto Pascoal, Mauricio Einhorn and many others. Standout
cut for me is "Tudo Bem" which builds & builds, feauring
some tasty buzzy flutework and jazzy guitar riffs (shades of Wes...)
over cool bossa beats.
174 ELIS REGINA ..EM PLENO VERAO PHILIPS(URU) sold
Classic release from one of Brazil's foremost vocal deities. Fantastic
music, very groovy - it's 1976 - so you know it's funky! "Bicho

Or, 'The one with the Black Sleeve', as this LP seems to be known in
some circles! Funky Afro-brazilian
beats on "Malandro Guardado" & a nice uplifting groove
on "Lamento Do Capoeira".
178 WILSON SIMONAL ALEGRIA ALEGRIA VOL.2 EMI ODEON(URU) sold
(Ex+/vg) The sleeve shot is arguably worth the price of the record alone,
but of course it's the music that
counts and luckily the album lives up to it's promise delivering the
good groove in spades. Includes the
classic bossa-bomb "Cai Cai" Altogether now -'Um dois..'
179 WILSON SIMONAL ALEGRIA ALEGRIA VOL.3 ARIEL(ARG) 20.00
More superb grooves, it is worth mentioning, of course, that none other
than Som Tres provided the juice for Simonal's early output. Another
club classic here in the shape of "Silvia Lenheira", an Afro-bossa
shaker penned by Jorge Ben but which Simonal made very much his own.
180 DAFE PRA QUE VOU RECORDAR WARNER BROS(BRA) sold
Excellent, consistent funky soul from Rio, "De Alegria Raiou O

the keys etc!

As you'd expect, the cover of Jorge Ben's "Cosa Nostra" is
present and correct, sounding raw, stripped down and satisfyingly different!

"Mary Help" has that Afro-brazilian sweetness, with steady
rhythm guitar, tight horns & guttural vox/rap.
184 GAL COSTA CANTA CAYMMI PHILIPS(BRA) 20.00
Beautiful album, it's probably my favourite Gal LP. There's some top
players present - Antonio Adolfo, Joao Donato to name a couple - and
a bunch of sweet, sweet melodies topped off with Gal's delightful way
with a melody. "Vatapa", "O Vento", "Rainha
Do Mar".
185 AECIO FLAVIO & QUARTEZANATO CAMINHO DA BARRA MPBC(BRA) 25.00

afro-brazilian chanting and sounds that are just out of this world.

885 TIM MAIA MUNDO RACIONAL
VOL.1 SEROMA(BRA) sold
Don't know what was going through his mind when
he recorded this.. There's extended rants about rational energy (what?),
and apparently he alienated both church and government with his cultish
associations, hence the lack of sales and consequent rarity of this
LP. But thankfully, he did lay down some mesmerizing tunes to go with
his deranged philosophies! The majestic "Rational Culture" grooves brilliantly
for over 12 funky as hell minutes. Released on his own independent Seroma
label.
886 MIGUEL DE DEUS BLACK SOUL

Excellent funk bomb from Brazil. Sporting the biggest
Afro wig it's possible to hold on your head without snapping your neck
(even more bizarre- it's sittting on top of another real afro hairdo),

tunes, & even manage to get a fusion edge on things with Flaca Louca".

are subtle - less electronic harshness, more natural rhythms and sound,
but the result is a very fresh-sounding version!

157 JOYCE PASSARINHO URBANO CONTINENTAL sold
Recorded as part of an international folk series
of some sort, this is more usually referred to as 'the girl with the
afro drinking a coke'! Soft, gentle rhythms, relaxing vocals, this is
Joyce at her most hippy-ish. Having said that, it's a top quality selection
with some essential tunes and a pleasure to listen to.
