1827 RONNIE
APRIL'S POSITIVE ENERGY VOLUME 1 JUDE RECORDS 25.00 (SEALED)
It gives me real pleasure to be able to offer you this legendary album
at such a fine price, I've been
dealing records for many years now and opportunities like this simply
don't come along very often.
This is it, THE legendary release by Ronnie April's Positive Energy,
pressed by Ronnie on his own
Jude imprint and distributed only locally by him without success, leading
to the disappearance of all
but a few copies. An impossibly rare holy grail which has changed hands
in the past for as much as
£300! Mainly though, it simply never turns up and for the most
part remained unknown to most,
although "Snowflake" has been a stable of the jazzdance scene
for years and the track was even
bootlegged at one point. Imagine then, my pleasure at finding a box
of sealed original copies, a factory sealed box which left the pressing
plant in the Bronx over a quarter of a century ago and remained untouched
and unopened until now! We're talking serious sweaty palms here, people!
Most importantly, the music is amazing - composer, arranger, producer,
saxophonist, clarinetist and flautist, Ronnie April has performed with
many greats such as Tito Puente, Frank Foster, Nat Adderley, Lionel
Hampton, and Louis Armstrong, to name a few. Which, of course, explains
why his first solo release is such an assured one. With Brazilian jazz
dancer "Snowflake" remaining the star cut - a Joe Sample composition
combining strong samba rhythms with funk coupled with some very fine
sax and piano solos and swirling female vocals - this is one smoking
tune! There's a lot more to this album too, it has a really cool jazzy
disco sound which happens to be very much in favour today, a kind of
deep disco feel with strong jazz flavours and tons of female vocals/scats.
Think a jazzy, funky version of Milton Hamilton's 'My Love Supreme'
and that whole underground disco scene, and you've got the sound of
"Dancer's Theme" with it's great funky bassline, gliding keys,
flying horn solos and solid club groove! "Rasmonde" features
some really deep Rhodes grooving as does "Sure, Sure, Sure",
while "Diamonds For Ida" has a killer uptempo modal/scats
feel... Phew!!
28 ANTHONY ORTEGA A DELANTO JAZZZ 90.00
Never heard of this Jazzz label, (must be rarrre.. !) In demand &

1948 THE IMPOSSIBLES
STAGE SHOW.. IN HIS BEST SWINGING MOOD STAGE SHOW (THAI) 250.00
'The one with the
white cover and them standing in a line'. Might sound like the tag for
an episode of
'Friends', but using descriptions like this only underlines how RARE
a piece of vinyl can be
sometimes, where there's just so little info to go round. This is indeed
The Impossibles, as in the Thai
funk group who did a hot (pepper) album for Philips. This one, however,
is on a whole different level of rarity, seeing as it was only released
locally, with tiny (I've heard 100-200) numbers being pressed up for
the few Bangkok locals who bought vinyl at the time. The music's insane,
with hot funky versions of everything from "Funky Party" &
"I Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby" to "Pick Up The
Pieces" & "Superstition", breaks, beats, the lot!
1949 SUE BARKER
SUE BARKER CREST INT.(AUS) 150.00
Phew! Rare, actually
- very rare these days - essential slab of indie soul jazz from Oz.
Absolutely smoking version of Curtis's "Love To The People",
stone groove and gorgeous vocals - you need this!
2246 PETE SCHOFIELD
& THE CANADIANS DO SOMETHING NICE TODAY PERIWINKLE (CAN) 75.00
Wicked funk/jazz club tune with great female vocals, the overall feel
is reminiscent of Sweden's Doris with that funky beat groove, solid
horns and driving percussion. Canadian-only release, a future classic!
475 SYLVESTER SYLVESTER AND THE HOT BAND BLUE THUMB 15.00
Early release,
put together when still kicking around on Haight St., finding himself
and playing with
the Hot Band. Sylvester hadn't fully come into his own as an artist,
but the version of "Southern Man"
in funky rock style is killah! The album itself comes with a unique
'scratch'n sniff' flower on the front
and a full size poster of Sylvester!
1932 SYLVESTER
SYLVESTER FANTASY 15.00
At one point in
the late-seventies, Sylvester really started to mature as an artist,
successfully teaming
up with the Two Tons of Fun and (more questionably!), with Honey Records'
boss Harvey Fuqua. His
flamboyant, exhuberant nature and soulful gospel roots translate perfectly
on what is probably the
epitome of joyful abandon on record, with the full seven minute celebration
of life that is "Over & Over", soulful disco hedonism
at its finest!

1919 BILLY FOSTER
& AUDIO S/T EQUISTAR (SEALED) 25.00
What a great find!
Managed to get my hands on a handful of sealed original copies of this
beauty, so I'm offering this rare private issue soul LP from Indiana
(on Billy Foster's own label) at a very nice price, as it usually goes
for at least double! Brilliant modern soul & boogie, with a nice
left-field jazzy touch in that indie vein and great female vocals by
Glenda Eskew & Brenda Marshall. "I Need Your Love" - is
probably the biggest cut on here, funky, funky soulful boogie! But there's
loads to choose from - check out the funky "Night Music",
squelchy synths and slap bass with female choruses and a bad ass boogie
beat! "Always On My Mind" - great mid-tempo floater, "City
Lights", easy hand-clapping vibe, uplifting instro jazzy theme.

World" to the
bumpin' funky soul of "Crossing Over".
1921 TOWER OF
POWER URBAN RENEWAL WARNER BROS. 15.00
One of the tightest
early albums from Tower Of Power, with that funky choppy groove that
feels like a
San Francisco version of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, riffing
away in a stoner funk mode.
Lenny Williams sings lead vocals, and choice cut award has to go to
the brassy anthem "There Is
Only So Much Oil In The Ground", an uptempo funky club classic,
with a theme that is even
more relevant today than it was 30 years ago!
1922 ASHA PUTHLI
ASHA PUTHLI CBS(HOL) 25.00
Asha Puthli's first
album, from 1974, an excellent set of funky soul tunes, with backings
that are a
mixture of spacey electric, futuristic funk and organic feel. My personal
fave is the awesome take on
J.J. Cale's "Right Down Here", with that undeniably dope intro,
irresitibly danceable groove and her
unique, off-kilter vocals.
1923 DELEGATION

Good", the sizzling,
horn-laden party classic "Singing" etc!
1924 CARRIE
CLEVELAND LOOKING UP CLEVE/DEN PRODUCTIONS 60.00
Very rare Bay Area
private issue LP, featuring rootsy soul from singer Carrie Cleveland
and producer, composer Bill Cleveland. The secret weapon on here is
instrumental funk bomb "Take Me To A Disco", complete with
party chants, a conga-driven rhythm and some totally wild, off-kilter,
broke-down, junkyard-synth, just-can't-stop, call-the-cops madness!

for his ability to draw you in and envelop you in his warm, loving island
world. As
ever, successfully transmitting his Afro-pacific soulful feel on this

all-time wonder that is "Would You Believe In Me", but really
every song's a winner here - "The War

Pee Wee Ellis.

that just builds and builds in intensity.
1934 BOHANNON
SUMMERTIME GROOVE MERCURY 15.00
He went from griity
gospel soul to plodding one-trick disco pony, so this set is perfect
for catching him
in that transitional phase, when the grooves were fully formed but not
over-cooked, and magnificent
they are too! Pulling together a series of irresistible disco rhythms
with the organic, soulful feel
stemming from his Georgia gospel roots, resulting in the uplifting,
anthemic dancefloor smashes "Let's Start The Dance" and "Me
