1827 RONNIE
APRIL'S POSITIVE ENERGY VOLUME 1 JUDE RECORDS 25.00 (SEALED)
It gives me real pleasure to be able to offer you this legendary album
at such a fine price, I've been
dealing records for many years now and opportunities like this simply
don't come along very often.
This is it, THE legendary release by Ronnie April's Positive Energy,
pressed by Ronnie on his own
Jude imprint and distributed only locally by him without success, leading
to the disappearance of all
but a few copies. An impossibly rare holy grail which has changed hands
in the past for as much as
£300! Mainly though, it simply never turns up and for the most
part remained unknown to most,
although "Snowflake" has been a stable of the jazzdance scene
for years and the track was even
bootlegged at one point. Imagine then, my pleasure at finding a box
of sealed original copies, a factory sealed box which left the pressing
plant in the Bronx over a quarter of a century ago and remained untouched
and unopened until now! We're talking serious sweaty palms here, people!
Most importantly, the music is amazing - composer, arranger, producer,
saxophonist, clarinetist and flautist, Ronnie April has performed with
many greats such as Tito Puente, Frank Foster, Nat Adderley, Lionel
Hampton, and Louis Armstrong, to name a few. Which, of course, explains
why his first solo release is such an assured one. With Brazilian jazz
dancer "Snowflake" remaining the star cut - a Joe Sample composition
combining strong samba rhythms with funk coupled with some very fine
sax and piano solos and swirling female vocals - this is one smoking
tune! There's a lot more to this album too, it has a really cool jazzy
disco sound which happens to be very much in favour today, a kind of
deep disco feel with strong jazz flavours and tons of female vocals/scats.
Think a jazzy, funky version of Milton Hamilton's 'My Love Supreme'
and that whole underground disco scene, and you've got the sound of
"Dancer's Theme" with it's great funky bassline, gliding keys,
flying horn solos and solid club groove! "Rasmonde" features
some really deep Rhodes grooving as does "Sure, Sure, Sure",
while "Diamonds For Ida" has a killer uptempo modal/scats
feel... Phew!!
28 ANTHONY ORTEGA A DELANTO JAZZZ 90.00
Never heard of this Jazzz label, (must be rarrre.. !) In demand &
yes, very rarrre private press deep jazz from '75. Anthony Ortega played

1948 THE IMPOSSIBLES
STAGE SHOW.. IN HIS BEST SWINGING MOOD STAGE SHOW (THAI) 250.00
'The one with the
white cover and them standing in a line'. Might sound like the tag for
an episode of
'Friends', but using descriptions like this only underlines how RARE
a piece of vinyl can be
sometimes, where there's just so little info to go round. This is indeed
The Impossibles, as in the Thai
funk group who did a hot (pepper) album for Philips. This one, however,
is on a whole different level of rarity, seeing as it was only released
locally, with tiny (I've heard 100-200) numbers being pressed up for
the few Bangkok locals who bought vinyl at the time. The music's insane,
with hot funky versions of everything from "Funky Party" &
"I Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby" to "Pick Up The
Pieces" & "Superstition", breaks, beats, the lot!
1949 SUE BARKER
SUE BARKER CREST INT.(AUS) 150.00

is reminiscent of Sweden's Doris with that funky beat groove, solid
horns and driving percussion. Canadian-only release, a future classic!
475 SYLVESTER SYLVESTER AND THE HOT BAND BLUE THUMB 15.00
Early release,
put together when still kicking around on Haight St., finding himself
and playing with
the Hot Band. Sylvester hadn't fully come into his own as an artist,
but the version of "Southern Man"
in funky rock style is killah! The album itself comes with a unique
'scratch'n sniff' flower on the front
and a full size poster of Sylvester!
1932 SYLVESTER
SYLVESTER FANTASY 15.00
At one point in
the late-seventies, Sylvester really started to mature as an artist,
successfully teaming
up with the Two Tons of Fun and (more questionably!), with Honey Records'
boss Harvey Fuqua. His
flamboyant, exhuberant nature and soulful gospel roots translate perfectly
on what is probably the
epitome of joyful abandon on record, with the full seven minute celebration
of life that is "Over & Over", soulful disco hedonism
at its finest!

What a great find!
Managed to get my hands on a handful of sealed original copies of this
beauty, so I'm offering this rare private issue soul LP from Indiana
(on Billy Foster's own label) at a very nice price, as it usually goes
for at least double! Brilliant modern soul & boogie, with a nice
left-field jazzy touch in that indie vein and great female vocals by
Glenda Eskew & Brenda Marshall. "I Need Your Love" - is
probably the biggest cut on here, funky, funky soulful boogie! But there's
loads to choose from - check out the funky "Night Music",
squelchy synths and slap bass with female choruses and a bad ass boogie
beat! "Always On My Mind" - great mid-tempo floater, "City
Lights", easy hand-clapping vibe, uplifting instro jazzy theme.

1921 TOWER OF
POWER URBAN RENEWAL WARNER BROS. 15.00
One of the tightest
early albums from Tower Of Power, with that funky choppy groove that
feels like a
San Francisco version of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, riffing
away in a stoner funk mode.
Lenny Williams sings lead vocals, and choice cut award has to go to
the brassy anthem "There Is
Only So Much Oil In The Ground", an uptempo funky club classic,
with a theme that is even
more relevant today than it was 30 years ago!
1922 ASHA PUTHLI
ASHA PUTHLI CBS(HOL) 25.00
Asha Puthli's first
album, from 1974, an excellent set of funky soul tunes, with backings
that are a
mixture of spacey electric, futuristic funk and organic feel. My personal
fave is the awesome take on
J.J. Cale's "Right Down Here", with that undeniably dope intro,
irresitibly danceable groove and her
unique, off-kilter vocals.

2000 DANIEL LENCINA CANDOMBES DE VANGUARDIA FERMATA(ARG) sold
Superb release, so rare! This is a great example of how different styles
from around the world can
converge in surprising and successful ways. Includes the awesome "Negro
En Sol Menor" - here,
heavily percussive Afro-Candombe street rhythms meet a banging jazz
horn section, cue an
irresistible club burner, forged in Uruguay all the way back in 1966
but still sounding fresh today!
"Celestino", "Sapaluba" - smoking solos, fierce!
2001 GERARDO BATIZ AZUL CON LECHE PENTAGRAMA (MEX) 40.00
Mexican jazz piano wizard and the man responsible for such stunning
(and impossibly rare!) tunes as
"En Fa" delivers another couple of aces here, check out the
beautiful "Como Vuelo De Un Avestruz",
a hypnotic, swaying samba-jazz number with uplifting female vocals.
The flip features a driving
Brazilian jazz cut "El Minuto", with sparkling percussion
and horn solos.
2002 GERARDO BATIZ BUGAMBILIA PENTAGRAMA (MEX) 40.00
Gerardo's deft touch and imagination come into play for the samba-funk
tune "Menguere" which mixes the funky bass groove with scats,
jazzy piano and, as a flourish, a cool rhythm augmented by Gerardo himself
on steel drum!
2003 ISLA ISLA PENTAGRAMA ESP. (MEX) 100.00
Early project for main man Gerardo Batiz, and it's a really rare indie
production released only through
Pentagrama's special product division. Top quality, earthy, jazzy latin
sounds, with the strong melodic
content and songwriting that is Batiz's trademark, on deep tunes like
"Mali", "Kamusekele" and the
standout for me, "Rupesh" - rippling piano riffs, sweet flute
and humming chorus.

groovers "Yeya Son", "La 132", "Tambo Iya".
2007 LA REVOLUCION DE EMILIANO ZAPATA LA NUEVA ONDA DE DIMECA (MEX)
100.00
Mexican psyche-rock garage heroes were at an interesting transitional
point here, having decided to
take a radically new route. The year was 1975, and before they made
the definitive move into the (lucrative) ballads market, they first
decided to experiment with the 'new groove' and cut this cool album,
adding wah-wah guitar, congas and tasty horns to their all-new funky
mix. The result is a couple of latin-funk bangers - "Mujer Latina"
& the breakbeat-driven "Ella Tiene Eso", as well the superb,
uplifting folk-funk groove "You Are My Dream". Rare!
2008 PEACE AND LOVE PEACE AND LOVE DENVER (MEX SEALED) 30.00
Later issue of this rare piece, just managed to unearth a handful of
these! Far out Mexican latin-funk
with brassy intensity - "Latin Feelin". The absolute killer
is "We Got The Power" which bursts into life
with a piano/percussion theme which is then taken over by the larger
than life horns. This funky vocal
monster then builds up with layers of percussion, a breakdown, a change
in tempo.. excellent!
2009 LOUIE RAMIREZ A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLACK COTIQUE(SEALED) 25.00
Wicked, very effective Nuyorican latin-jazz set from '76, best known
for the super-funky latin disco
version of "Do It Anyway You Wanna" - an essential club spin!
2010 ANDY HARLOW
LA MUSICA BRAVA VAYA(SEALED) sold
Great latin set from '74, quintessential sounds from the one and only
Andy Harlow - there's also a
secret weapon tucked away at the end of the b-side, the latin-jazz club
bomb "Batumbique" - samba
rhythms, whistles, a voiceover detailing the various nuances of the
rhythms and it all explodes
into a celebratory climax with full horn section and batucada beats
- parrtay!
2011 DE KALAFE DE KALAFE PALACIO(VEN) 100.00
Mega-rare Venezuelan release from this psych/garage female singer, who
ditches her rock baggage
and explores her roots instead, serving up along the way what is one
of the best ever versions of "Ye
Me Le". It's a blinding take, a dancefloor cert with exhuberant
vocals and rootsy acoustic stylings
backed by a deceptively tough rhythm section, plus horns, swinging percussion,
the works!
2012 MARQUEZ PA-CA HISPAVOX(SPA) sold

is
"Negreta 'Sabrosona' ", an intense number which features extended
jazz guitar work a la Wes
Montgomery over a sweet, fast but subtle latin refrain. Over on the
flip there's a similar thing going on
in a much more spaced out way with "Ecos Cosmics", dedicated
to Lonnie Liston Smith.

unique in that it seamlessly laces a jazzy vocal bossa with a mean-sounding
brass section, as well as
providing a showcase for rhythm-master Pedro Dos Santos to unleash his

to
get together in the Belter & Sonoland studios (Barcelona & Madrid

of way. Rare!!

2108 ARNIE LAWRENCE
LOOK TOWARD A DREAM PROJECT 3 20.00
Strictly speaking
a jazz album, recorded in 1968, with heavyweights like Larry Coryell,
Richard Davis
and Roy Haynes. The album isn't easily pigeonholed however, with definite
psyche/rock leanings. The best tracks sound like an out there, funky,
modal Gabor Szabo - "Seymour Chick-Chick", "Gonna Get
Some Right Now" and a mad "Feeling Good".

the Beatles, latin-style? Hope someone at Rediffusion got fired for
dreaming up this 'concept'. But hey, people really dig that afro-cuban
congas-meets-"Eleanor Rigby"-groove, so there you go..

Believe! Massive
demand for this cool'n groovy vocal scat-led tune, with a deep Fender
funk'n jazz
groove, fat drums (killer breaks as well!) and all the necessary ingredients
to make this tune such a
great dancer. Near impossible to find as well, recorded at Sydney restaurant
'Jason's' which doubled
up as a part-time jazz venue; this 7" was sold to patrons of said
establishment, hence the extreme
rarity! Includes their other big tune on the flip - "What's The
Use".

75.00

Tordo in full

that build with the increasingly urgent tempo and jazzy doublebass!
2182 MORTON
AND THE UPTIGHTS MONTEGO/TAURUS PALETTE(HOL) sold
Rare! Brilliant
double-sider from 1970 from this mysterious Dutch combo. Morton &
the Uptights were
an offshoot of the J.J.Band, led by none other than cult legend Scott
Bradford, and featuring Belgian
jazz great Philippe Catherine on guitar! The music is really amazing,
a mixture of Ska & jazzy soul with a groovy & funky latino rhythm
section.
First up there's
"Montego" and what you get is a ska flavoured groove (written
by Scott
Bradford) that sounds like the slightly demented lost Jamaican cousin
of Mulatu of Ethiopia, with a
really raw sound, pounding piano, great percussion & skanking horns.
Over on the flip, the hypnotic
"Taurus" awaits, same deal - Scott Bradford penned, but slightly
more laid back and very funky, a
steady, driving groove, brilliant eastern-hued horns and just a general
feeling of exotic wonder!
2183 SERGE GAINSBOURG
LE PACHA PHILIPS(FRA) 150.00
(Ex+/vg++) Mega-rare
picture sleeve 60s soundtrack EP, this is always highly sought after,
not just for the infamous break on the dope "Requiem Pour Un C..",
here in its original release, but especially for the funky sitar freakout
that is "Psychastenie", what an unholy groove!
2184 MARCIA
HINES YOU GOTTA LET GO WIZARD(AUS) 350.00
Considered to be
one of the rarest Australian soul/funk singles ever - this killer soulful
dancer only
received an excrutiatingly limited release as a seven - no idea why
- as the album then went on to
achieve platinum status in Oz! There is also a very rare, later Italian
7" issue on Digit, but copies of this og Aussie issue never turn
up, and according to some sources, only 10 or so are known to exist!

to pass, I have no idea! Brilliant track, a must for fans of Northern
and a 100 percent certified floorfiller!
2187 THE BILALIAN
EXPRESS PHILLY/DISCO NIGHTS LK RECORDS sold

is ROUGH! Killer funky disco/boogie from '76. The Bilalian's drop the
rudest bass a
booty can bear, all loose-limbed and raw with a great mid-tempo boogie
beat to match and languid,
fonky vocals. They get real dirty in the middle, with a squelchy Sly
inspired organ solo and a killer
breakdown towards the end, then a false ending, just to play with you
a little more! The flip is an ace
uptempo horn-led disco groover.
2188 LATIN BREED
MARANATHA GCP 75.00

what is the most notorious all-time loft classic and a top 5 anthem
for some of the biggest NY DJs. Discovered at the time by David Mancuso
on one of his head-clearing jaunts across the border (Mexican RCA exec
gave him some 12" promos), it soon became one of the key tunes
of the era, being a specially extended disco version with a killer breakdown,
not available on the album or 7" -and not released elsewhere -
which explains why it quickly achieved such holy grail status on the
disco scene!
